Today’s money is not Our Money
Today’s money is called “fiat money”. It is the Euro, the US dollar or any other money in use today.
Fiat money is like disturbing a nice football match by throwing in extra balls. On the field we see confusion about which is the right ball. And stress as to when yet another ball will be thrown in. Most probably the match will not be played till the end. Somebody broke the game by breaking the rules.
Hard Money
Money is communicating value. You need rules to properly communicate. Money works best with a fixed amount of money-units in circulation. This provides a proper value standard: a standard that does not get diluted. Same as one meter equals one meter. Always. Everywhere. Money that provides a proper value standard is “Hard Money”.
With fiat money, more and more money is being added. We call this “money printing”. Nobody knows how much money is sloshing around, and when more will be added. With fiat money, the value standard is broken. Without a proper value standard, society slowly deteriorates.
Money printing breaks the rules of the game without the players having any say. The game has been taken over by the people throwing in the balls. This is not our game. This is not Our Money.
Bearer Money
With physical money, you own the money as holder or “bearer”. No need to trust anybody to hold, let alone spend the money for you. Money you truly own is “Bearer Money”.
With the emergence of the internet over the past 50 years, fiat money evolved into digital fiat money. To make digital payments possible, the authorities built a centralized banking network on top of the internet. All digital payments are routed via this centralized network. There was no alternative to this centralized system because Internet Money had not yet been invented.
With digital fiat money, you need to trust the bank to hold your money. You need to trust the bank that you can spend your money. You are dependent on the authorities to get access to their money system. Digital fiat money has ripped us from the bearer aspect of money.
Conditional access to money is like a game without the players having any say with whom they play. This is not our game. This is not Our Money.
Stuck with fiat money…
Changing the rules of the game will not last. Once enough players realize this is not their game anymore, they will stop playing and demand to play a fair game according to the rules.
Digital fiat money broke the rules of the game. But all players had to play because a return to a fair game was not possible.
In the absence of Internet Money, any payment via internet has to be made with digital fiat money. In other words, we got stuck with digital fiat money.
Heart Money
Throughout the ages, money gets invented and reinvented in search for the best money. Every society embraces the best money available in its time.
Heart Money is the best money available in its respective era. Money with properties that come closest to being a Hard Bearer money.
Gold has served as Heart Money throughout history. Gold cannot be printed like fiat money, thus guaranteeing a proper value standard. Gold is physical, thus guaranteeing ownership by its holder. Gold was Hard Bearer Money. But this was before the internet.
Since gold cannot live on the internet, it can no longer function as the best money. The Heart Money of our time would need to live on the internet.
